The Local Development Framework

The Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 made significant reforms to the planning system, including new arrangements for the preparation of development plans.

The Local Development Framework represents a completely new approach to planning and with much longer timescales.  Previously plans tended to look 5 - 10 years ahead.  The Local Development Framework will set out a strategy over 20 years - up to 2026 - an entire generation.  It provides an opportunity to shape the future of Wealden.

Local Development Frameworks are based upon spatial planning and take into account other relevant strategies and programmes.  In particular the Local Development Framework is shaped by the aims and objectives for Wealden set out in the Sustainable Community Strategy.  Together with the regional spatial strategy - the South East Plan - the Local Development Framework will provide the basis for planning and development in Wealden.

The LSP recognised the crucial importance of the Local Development Framework and has been closely engaged in the process over recent years.  In May 2007 the LSP hosted an event for Parishes and Partners on engaging with the Local Development Framework.  Presentations from the day, and the on-line version of the toolkit that was used at the time are available through the links below:

The LSP Local Development Framework Toolkit

The LSP responded to Wealden District Council's Local Development Framework Core Strategy Spatial Options Consultation which took place during July and August 2009.  A copy of our response is available here (pdf, 29kb)

The LSP has also agreed to assist with a pilot project to help develop an Infrastructure Delivery Plan for the Local Development Framework. Wealden District Council, with support from the Planning Advisory Service, will develop a delivery plan that will set out how the infrastructure required alongside the Local Development Framework Core Strategy will be put in place.  This was discussed at a workshop held on 24 November 2009 - presentations from the day are available here.
